The US Department of Labor has reported that 3,929 work fatalities were investigated in 2013, with the largest majority occurring in the construction industry. Being struck by an object was one of the leading causes of these worker deaths, second only to falls. According the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, approximately 75% of struck-by fatalities involved heavy equipment such as trucks or bulldozers.
Some of these construction fatalities include:
March 2013: Worker struck and killed by truck that was backing up
April 2013: Two workers were struck and killed by a vehicle in a construction work zone
May 2013: Worker struck and killed by a truck backing up
June 2013: Worker struck and killed by a dump truck
Struck-by accidents are among the four leading causes of workplace fatalities and one in four struck-by vehicle deaths involved construction workers, more than any other occupation.
Most employee injuries and fatalities are due to the lack of safe operating procedures, lack of safety-rule enforcement, and inadequate training. A common trend in the examples listed above is employees being backed over by vehicles or equipment. Even if vehicles have backup alarms, these accidents still happen due to alarms often being ignored.
The following tips will help create a safe and healthy work environment for workers:
- Spotters should be used any time a vehicle is moving or equipment with a restricted view is operating on site. Spotters should always be positioned where the driver can see them.
- Always practice safe operation techniques, such as ensuring employees do not use cell phones while working and walking around heavy equipment.
- Familiarize all employees with the worksite and all vehicle operations, making sure they are aware of intersections and blind spot areas in the work zone.
- Check vehicles before each shift to ensure all parts and accessories are in safe operating condition, including brake systems, tires, emergency brakes, steering and lights.
Installing PreView Radar proximity detection systems on vehicles will further help to significantly reduce struck-by fatalities. Our warning systems help to improve driver engagement and situational awareness in real time. Our systems are designed specific to the vehicle or machine type and the blind spots that come with them. We understand that the mix of oversized trucks, service trucks, and people on a construction site can create a dangerous environment, which is why our systems actively warn drivers of potential collisions with both moving and stationary items.
