June 2010, Precise Path Robotics: Combining accuracy, precision, and safety with PreView Radar Precise Path Robotics developed an advanced autonomous robotic greens mower called the RG3. (See it in action on You Tube) No ordinary autonomous mower, the RG3 Mower utilizes Precise Path’s patented local positioning system to accurately know where the mower is at all times. Because of this technology, the RG3 mower can perform efficiently and effectively over a variety of outdoor terrains. In addition, it is capable of mowing in very straight and accurate lines, far better than the average human. This state-of-the art autonomous mower has allowed golf course super attendants to increase productivity while saving money on their cost of labor.

One area that Precise Path Robotics knew was critical during their development was safety. The team of engineers needed 360 degree object detection coverage to ensure the safety of people around the mower as well as protecting the RG3 and surrounding property from damage. They incorporated multiple technologies together to provide the safest possible solution. When asked why they looked to the patent technology of PreView Radar, Randy Parmerlee stated “…we had confidence in the PreView Radar because it was already successfully in use by other companies, it did not require a lot of testing and validation, and it was easy to integrate with our own hardware and software.”

Although we didn’t have golf courses or automated lawn mowers in mind when we patented PreView Radar, we’re excited to see the robust features we required to keep heavy duty vehicles safe have proven to be beneficial in the advanced autonomous field.
